An ancient place name believed to have been located southeast of Mesopotamia. It is also called Tilmun. It is frequently mentioned in Sumerian-Akkadian inscriptions over a period of about 1800 years, from the crude Sumerian inscription of Urnanshe, king of Lagash, around 2520 BCE, to the Assyrian inscription of Sargon II, around 710 BCE. It appears to have been a stopover (watering point) for ships traveling between the head of the Persian Gulf and the Indus River region in the earliest period, but the Urnanshe record above mentions it as a supplier of timber.
