At that time, under pressure from the Uzbek Abu al-Khayr Khan, a nomadic group led by Jānibeg Khan, a descendant of the royal family that ruled the left wing of the Kipchak Khanate, migrated from the Syr Darya basin to the northern foothills of the western Tianshan. They were called Uzbek Qazaq or simply Qazaq (meaning wanderers or adventurers), and they absorbed those who had left Uzbekistan and expanded their influence into the Kipchak steppe (Kazakhstan). During the first half of the 16th century under Qāsim Khan (reigned 1511-23), their population had swelled to a great extent, estimated at 300,000 to 1 million, and they eventually came to control a wide area from the Ural Mountains and the northwestern shore of the Caspian Sea in the west to Lake Balkhash in the east.
