The Kofun period continues from the Yayoi period. Farming, which began in the Yayoi period, spread relatively quickly to most parts of Japan, but it took some time before people began using iron-tipped farm tools such as hoes and sickles. Eventually, the spread of iron tools led to the expansion of cultivated land, and production gradually increased. The Kofun period was a time when this rise in economic power finally led to the emergence of a form of governance as a nation in this land. It was also a time when, as national unification progressed, the gap in living conditions between the chieftains who were incorporated into the governing structure and ordinary peasants began to widen greatly.
