Potted plants have limited root development, so they will not grow well unless they are grown in soil that is well-ventilated and can adequately retain moisture and nutrients. For this reason, soil is rarely used as is for potted cultivation; it is common to mix it with materials to improve its physicochemical properties, or to mix these materials alone without using soil. Compost is soil for potted cultivation made in this way, and is also called potting soil. Materials used in compost must not only have excellent physicochemical properties, but also be free from the risk of pests, light, and inexpensively available in large quantities.

鉢植えの植物は根の発達が制限されるので，通気性がよく，水分や養分を十分保持できる土壌を用いないと生育が悪い。このため，鉢栽培では土壌をそのまま用いることは少なく，理化学性を改善するための資材と混合するか，土壌を使わずにそれらの資材だけを混合して利用するのが一般的である。配合土はこのようにして作った鉢栽培用の土壌で，培養土ともいう。配合土に利用する資材は理化学性がすぐれているだけでなく，病虫害のおそれがなく，軽くて，しかも安価で大量に入手できるものでなければならない。
