Animal style

Japanese: アニマル･スタイル（英語表記）animal style

For about 1,000 years, beginning from the end of the 7th century BCE, nomadic horse-riding peoples who lived in the steppes of the inland of Eurasia created and loved animal designs and patterns. Similar animal styles were widespread from Hungary in the west to Mongolia in the east, from southern Siberia in the north to the Iranian plateau in the south, and decorated utensils such as swords, quivers, horse harnesses, and belt fittings. Materials used included gold, silver, electrum, bronze, as well as wood and felt, and some were inlaid with precious stones such as lapis lazuli.

前7世紀末ごろから約1000年間にわたり，ユーラシア内陸部の草原地帯で活動した遊牧騎馬民族が創造し，愛好した動物意匠，動物文様。西はハンガリーから東はモンゴリア，北は南シベリアから南はイラン高原まで，同類のアニマル･スタイルが広くおこなわれ，剣や箙（えびら），馬具，帯金具などの器物を飾った。材料には金，銀，エレクトラム，青銅のほか，木やフェルトを用い，なかにはラピスラズリなどの貴石を象嵌したものもある。
