Capromis (English) Cuban hutia

Japanese: カプロミス（英語表記）Cuban hutia

A general term for a large rodent mammal of the Capromys genus in the Capromidae family, which at first glance resembles a brown rat. It is also called hutia. It is endemic to Cuba and Jamaica in the West Indies, and about four species are known, including the Desmarest hutia. It is a plump rodent thought to be closely related to the chinchilla, with a body length of 30-50 cm, a tail length of 15-30 cm, and a weight of 4-7 kg. It usually has five digits on both the front and back legs, and its body is densely covered with cottony underfur and long, stiff topfur. The dorsal surface of the body varies from gray-brown to reddish brown to blackish brown, and the ventral surface is usually pale in color.

一見，ドブネズミに似て大きい齧歯（げつし）目カプロミス科(フチア科)カプロミス属Capromysの哺乳類の総称。フーティアともいう。西インド諸島のキューバ，ジャマイカなどの特産で，デスマレストフーティアなど約4種が知られる。チンチラに近縁と思われる太った齧歯類で，体長30～50cm，尾長15～30cm，体重4～7kg，前･後脚ともふつう5指を備え，体には綿状の下毛と長くて硬い上毛を密生する。体の背面は灰褐色から赤褐色，黒褐色まで種々あり，腹面はふつう淡色。
