1922?-89 A Cuban pianist and bandleader, nicknamed the "King of Mambo." Some say he was born in 1917. Born in Matanzas, a city in the north of Cuba, he worked as a pianist in clubs and other venues before moving to Mexico in 1947 and forming an orchestra. After 1949, he recorded records such as "Que Rico el Mambo" and "Mambo No. 5," sparking a mambo boom in the United States and Japan. His music is characterized by a fast-paced, up-tempo rhythm and thick, yet crisp, brass and woodwind instruments, and the wind instrument sound is strongly influenced by the modern jazz Stan Kenton Orchestra.
