...Comunes, which are equivalent to Japanese cities, towns, and villages, whether urban or rural, have a tradition of several hundred years, and there are no town or village mergers, except when they are annexed to urban areas as a result of the expansion of metropolitan areas. The unity of the communes, also known as campanilism (countryism), is very strong. The second thing to note is that all Italian provinces (provinces) are named after their central cities (in some cases there are two).
