A town in Toda County in central Miyagi Prefecture. Located in the lower reaches of the Eai River, the main settlement was the castle site of the Date Aki clan. Located at the intersection of the Ishinomakibetsu Highway and the Sanuma Highway, the town prospered through the collection and distribution of rice, cocoons, and timber. It also produces a lot of sake, miso, and soy sauce. In recent years, it has also engaged in livestock farming and field crops. Known as Japan's first gold producing area, it is home to the Koganeyama Gold Ruins (historic site). The Ishinomaki Line and Kesennuma Line run through the town. 宮城県中部,遠田(とおだ)郡の町。江合(えあい)川下流域にあり,主集落は伊達安芸の居城地であった。石巻別街道と佐沼街道の交差点にあたり,米,繭,木材の集散で栄えた。酒,みそ,醤油の産も多い。近年は畜産,畑作も行う。日本初の金産出地として知られ,黄金山産金遺跡(史跡)がある。石巻線,気仙沼線が通じる。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。82.16km2。1万7494人(2010)。
