Hamabou - Hamabou

Japanese: ハマボウ - はまぼう
Hamabou - Hamabou

A deciduous tree of the Malvaceae (APG classification: Malvaceae). The leaves are long-stalked, alternate, obovate-circular, 3-6 cm long, slightly pointed at the tip, heart-shaped at the base, finely serrated at the edge, thick and papery with dense white hairs on the underside. In summer, one or two funnel-shaped, five-petaled flowers about 5 cm in diameter grow axillarily at the ends of the branches. The flowers are yellow with deep red bases. There are 8-10 bracteoles, fused at the base and covered with fine hairs. There are five sepals. There are many single stamens, through which the five styles of the pistil emerge, and the stigma is dark red. The capsule is egg-shaped and pointed, with persistent calyxes at the bottom. It grows on the seashore, and is found from Honshu west of the southern Kanto region to Kyushu and Amami Oshima. The name means "magnolia tree growing on the beach." It is planted as a coastal forest. The closely related species, Hamabou, is similar to Hamabou, but its leaves are large and circular-cordate, 10 to 15 centimeters long, and have entire or wavy sawtooth edges. It grows on the seashore, and is widely distributed from the Ogasawara Islands, Yakushima, and Tanegashima south, as well as in Southeast Asia, India, Australia, and the Pacific Islands.
