Henry Campbell-Bannerman

British politician. Also known as Camel Bannerman. Born in Glasgow as the second son of businessman J. Campbell. In 1872 he inherited his mother's coat of arms and later added the surname Bannerman. After earning a master's degree at the University of Glasgow and then at Cambridge, he became a Liberal MP in 1868. He served as Secretary of State for Ireland (1884-85) and Secretary of War (1886, 1892-95) in three cabinets under Gladstone, and supported the Irish Home Rule Bill. After Gladstone retired from politics in 1895, he continued in his father's footsteps and maintained a Liberal stance, opposing the "liberal imperialist" faction within the party such as Rosebery and Asquith, while attacking the South African policy of J. Chamberlain of the Unionist Party and criticizing the Boer War.

イギリスの政治家。キャメル･バナマンともいう。実業家J.キャンベルの次男としてグラスゴーに生まれる。1872年に母方の紋章を継承し，以後バナマン姓を加えた。グラスゴー大学，次いでケンブリッジ大学に学んで修士号を得た後，68年に自由党の代議士となり，3次にわたるグラッドストン内閣においてアイルランド事務長官(1884‐85)，陸相(1886,92‐95)を歴任，アイルランド自治法案を支持した。グラッドストンの政界引退(1895)後は，彼の衣鉢を継いであくまでも自由派本来の立場をとり，ローズベリー，アスキス等の党内〈自由帝国主義〉派と対立するいっぽう，統一党のJ.チェンバレンの南アフリカ政策を攻撃し，ボーア戦争を批判した。
