1836‐1908 British politician. Also known as Camel Bannerman. Born in Glasgow as the second son of businessman J. Campbell. In 1872 he inherited his mother's coat of arms and later added the surname Bannerman. After earning a master's degree at the University of Glasgow and then at Cambridge, he became a Liberal MP in 1868. He served as Secretary of State for Ireland (1884-85) and Secretary of War (1886, 1892-95) in three cabinets under Gladstone, and supported the Irish Home Rule Bill. After Gladstone retired from politics in 1895, he continued in his father's footsteps and maintained a Liberal stance, opposing the "liberal imperialist" faction within the party such as Rosebery and Asquith, while attacking the South African policy of J. Chamberlain of the Unionist Party and criticizing the Boer War. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
