Ichinen Sanzen - One thought, three thousand

A Buddhist term. This is a teaching preached by the great master Tiantai Zhiyi to show the true nature (actual appearance) of the phenomenal world (all laws) in which we live. He organized the various aspects of the phenomenal world into three thousand numbers, and taught that this world, which is made up of these things, does not change from the human mind (one thought) at any given time. In other words, everything cannot remain self-contained and independent, but exists in a relationship of non-dual infinity. Some people interpret this teaching as simply teaching that all laws are contained in the mind, but this does not accurately convey Zhiyi's true intention.

仏教用語。われわれが生きるこの現象世界（諸法）の真実の姿（実相(じっそう)）を示すべく、天台大師智顗(ちぎ)によって説かれた教説である。現象する世界の諸相を三千の数に整理して表し、そしてそうしたものからなるこの世界が人間のそのときどきの心（一念）と変わるものでないこと、すなわち、すべては自己完結的にそれ自身であり続けえず、不二相即の関係にたつことを教えたものである。ときにこの教えは心に一切法(いっさいほう)が具足されていることを教えるだけの教説と解される向きがあるが、それでは智顗の本意を正確に伝えることはできない。
