A former town in Awa District, northern Tokushima Prefecture. The northern half is mountainous, while the southern half is an alluvial fan in the Yoshino River basin, open for cultivation. The town produces vegetables, rice, wheat, and fruit, and also raises silkworms. The main settlement is the former Hayashi Town, which was a river port for riverboats, and is connected by a bridge to Yamakawa Town on the opposite bank of the Yoshino River. There is a dome pillar (a natural monument). In April 2005, it merged with Yoshino Town and Tonari Town in Itano District, and Ichiba Town in Awa District, to become a city, Awa City. 48.58 km2 .
