Osaka University

A national university corporation. Osaka Imperial University was founded in 1931 (Showa 6) with two faculties, Medicine and Science, as the second Imperial University in the Kinki region, with Osaka Medical College as its parent. Under the leadership of its first president, Nagaoka Hantaro, it developed as a university with a focus on science and engineering. The Faculty of Engineering was established in 1933, the Faculty of Law and Letters in 1948, and in 1949, Osaka Pharmaceutical College, the former Osaka High School, and the former Osaka Prefectural Naniwa High School were merged to relaunch as a new national university. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary in 1981, the campus was merged into two areas in Suita City and Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture. In 1993 (Heisei 5), the attached Medical Technology Junior College was reorganized to establish the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Health Sciences. In April 2004, following the enforcement of the National University Corporation Law, the university became a national university corporation. In October 2007, it merged with Osaka University of Foreign Studies to establish the School of Foreign Studies. The campus of the School of Foreign Studies is located in Minoh, Osaka.
