British actress. She gained popularity with her leading role in Pinero's The Second Mrs. Tuncurry (1893). In addition to Shakespeare and Ibsen, she also excelled in the female lead roles in Suderman's Magda (Hometown) and GB Shaw's Pygmalion. Although she possessed abundant acting ability and beauty, she was also known for her whims and sharp tongue. Her witty correspondence with her close friend Shaw was dramatized by American playwright Jerome Quilty (Dear Liar, 1960). [Kishi Tetsuo]
