Camp David is a presidential retreat located in the Catoctin Mountains in Maryland, about 120 km northwest of Washington, the capital of the United States. It was built as a retreat (Shangri-La) for President FD Roosevelt, and became the official presidential retreat in 1945. In 1953, President Eisenhower renamed it after his grandson. It has also been used as a secluded location for summit meetings. In September 1959, President Eisenhower and visiting Soviet Premier Khrushchev met here, marking an important step toward easing tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union, and the name Camp David became known worldwide.
