[Ancient times]
Chugoku, located at the western end of the Sanyo Road (Engishiki). Before the Ritsuryo system, the area in the southwest near the Shimonoseki Straits was called Anato no Kuni, and was ruled by the Anato kuni no miyatsuko. The name Nagato was first used in 665 (4th year of the Tenchi era), and it became a province governed by kokushi from that time on.
