A hill range 400-500m above sea level in western Germany, west of the Rhine and north of the Moselle. It is part of the Rhine Schist Mountains, which continue to the Ardennes in Belgium to the west. The area generally has gentle undulations, but is generally higher in the northwest and lower in the southeast. Farming and livestock farming are practiced here, but the area is sparsely populated due to unfavourable natural conditions such as climate and soil. The southeastern part is an area of old volcanic activity, with many beautiful circular lakes called maars, domes and cones, and in recent years it has attracted tourists, along with the national park in the north.
