The city occupies the central-southern part of Nagano Prefecture, the northern part of the Ina Basin (Ina Valley), the surrounding mountain areas, and the Mibu River basin. It is connected to the Iida Line and the Chuo Expressway. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center on the right bank of the Tenryu River was formerly Inabe-juku on the Sanshu Kaido, and it is an important location connected to the Koshu Kaido by the Kanazawa Kaido and the Kiso Kaido by the Gonbei Kaido. The silk-reeling industry before World War II was replaced by the full opening of the Chuo Expressway in 1982, and an industrial complex was created, leading to the development of the electrical equipment industry. Precision machinery industries such as optics and watches became popular. The farming villages in the lower part of the nearby river terrace produce rice, flowers (persimmons), and vegetables, while pears are cultivated in the upper part. The ruins of Takato Castle, known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, are located in the eastern part of the city. The high peaks of the Southern Alps tower over the eastern end of the city, making it a base for mountain climbing. In March 2006, Takato Town and Hase Village in Kamiina County were incorporated. ^667.93km2 . 71,093 people (2010).

長野県中南部，伊那盆地（伊那谷）北部と周辺山地および三峰川流域一帯を占める市。飯田線，中央自動車道が通じる。1954年市制。天竜川右岸の中心市街はかつての三州街道伊那部宿で，甲州街道とは金沢街道，木曾街道とは権兵衛街道で連絡した要地。第２次世界大戦前の製糸業に代わり，1982年に中央自動車道が全通して工業団地が造成され，電気機器工業が発展。光学，時計などの精密機械工業が盛んとなった。付近河岸段丘下段地域の農村は米，花卉(かき)，野菜を産し，上段地域ではナシが栽培される。東部に桜の名所として知られる高遠城跡がある。東端には南アルプスの高峰がそびえ，登山基地でもある。2006年３月上伊那郡高遠町，長谷村を編入。667.93km²。７万1093人（2010）。
