Seiichi Taki

Art historian. Doctor of Literature. Born in Tokyo as the eldest son of Meiji era Japanese painter Taki Katei (1832-1901). His pen names were Setsan and Setsuan. After graduating from Tokyo Imperial University, he lectured on Japanese and Oriental art history at the same university, as well as at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and Kyoto Imperial University, establishing the foundations of art history as a modern science. He also edited the art magazine Kokka for many years, publishing many essays and commentaries to promote Oriental art, while also working hard to research and preserve ancient art. He was awarded the Asahi Culture Award in 1940 (Showa 15). His major works include Taki Setsuan Art Essay Collection: Japan Edition (1943) and Literati Painting Introduction (1922).

美術史学者。文学博士。明治の日本画家滝和亭(かてい)（1832―1901）の長男として東京に生まれる。号は拙庵(せつあん)、節庵。東京帝国大学を卒業後、同校のほか東京美術学校、京都帝国大学で日本美術史および東洋美術史を講じ、近代科学としての美術史学の基礎を確立した。また美術雑誌『国華(こっか)』の編集に長年携わり、多くの論文や解説を発表して東洋美術の紹介に努力する一方、古美術の調査保存事業にも尽力した。1940年（昭和15）朝日文化賞を受賞。主著に『滝拙庵美術論集日本篇(へん)』（1943）、『文人画概論』（1922）などがある。
