An Armenian nationalist party. Founded in 1890 in Tiflis (now Tbilisi) in the Russian Empire. Meaning "federation." Also called Dashnaki, which means party members. At its inaugural meeting in 1992, it established a platform calling for the "liberation of Turkish Armenia." After the "Armenian Church Crisis" of 1903 (the Russian government's forced Russification measures), it decided to strengthen its movement in the Russian Caucasus as well. It advocated Socialist-Reform Party-style socialism, and joined the Second International in 1907. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
