Potash rock salt - Kariganen (English spelling) sylvite

A mineral that occurs as a minor component of rock salt deposits. It also occurs as a volcanic sublimate, and as a solid inclusion in quartz that constitutes the gangue of hydrothermal vein deposits. In addition to rock salt, it coexists with gypsum and magnesium sulfate minerals. At first glance, it is difficult to distinguish it from rock salt, but while rock salt quickly turns to powder when hit with a hammer, potassium rock salt has a deformed surface that absorbs the blow and is less likely to turn to powder. Stassfurt in Germany is a famous production area.

岩塩鉱床の副成分として産する鉱物。ほかに火山昇華物として産するほか、熱水鉱脈鉱床の脈石を構成する石英中の固体包有物としても産する。岩塩以外に石膏(せっこう)や硫酸マグネシウムの鉱物と共存する。一見、岩塩とは区別しがたいが、ハンマーでたたくと、岩塩はすぐ粉末化するのに対して、カリ岩塩は表面が変形したようになって打撃を吸収し、粉末になりにくい。ドイツのシュタッスフルトは産地として有名。
