In August 1962, the China Writers Association held a "Rural Themed Short Story Discussion" in Dalian, attended by 17 leading writers and critics in the literary world, including Zhou Yang, Mao Dun, and Zhao Shuli. The event was moderated by Shao Tsuenlin (1906-71), vice-chairman of the Writers Association and party secretary at the time. Based on the theory of realism, he advocated diversification of themes and creative methods, and opposed the subjective creative tendency, conceptualization, and formulaicization of works that had existed since the Great Leap Forward (1958). At the event, Shao Tsuenlin quoted Mao Dun's statement that "both ends are small, and the middle is big," and proposed to realistically portray the image of peasants who are in the middle and are filled with contradictions.
