1485‐1536 The first queen of England to King Henry VIII. The youngest daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, she married Arthur, Prince of Wales, in 1501, but after his death in 1509 remarried his younger brother, Henry VIII. Her daughter later became Mary I. In response to Henry's divorce suit, which sparked the English Reformation, Archbishop Cranmer declared the marriage invalid in 1533, and the Act of Succession the following year confirmed it. Catherine did not accept this and remained in England, but died in Kimbolton, Huntingdonshire. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
