Although it is sometimes used as a general term to refer to Japanese clothing in contrast to Western clothing, it generally refers to long clothing excluding haori, undergarments, and coats. It is said that kimono-style clothing was established in the Nara period. Kosode (short sleeves), worn as underwear until the end of the Heian period, came to be used as outerwear in the Kamakura period, when the upper garment was omitted. Hakama (trousers), worn by both men and women in the Muromachi period, were also omitted, and kosode became a kimono. Modern kimonos have not changed fundamentally since kosode. Kimono consist of sleeves, body, collar, and hanging collar, and the sleeves and body are cut in a continuous ring pattern from front to back, making them symmetrical. For women, the length is made about 20cm longer than the length of the garment, and is worn tucked up under the obi. Depending on the season, they can be worn as hitoe (single layer), awase (double layer), or padded with cotton. → Kimono fabric Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
