An oasis in the interior of Libya's Cyrenaica region, near the Egyptian border, which has long been located on the main pilgrimage route from North Africa to Mecca. In 1856 it became the base of the Sanusi sect, and in 1859 its founder, Muhammad bin Ali al-Sanusi, was buried here. After Italy occupied Libya in 1912, a dispute arose between Italy and Britain over the possession of the area, but the real power there was held by the anti-Italian Sanusi resistance movement. In 1925, the area became Libyan territory under the Italian-Egyptian Agreement, but the following year Italy suppressed the anti-Italian movement by the Sanusi sect.
