A religious movement that arose in 17th-century France. Port-Royal was originally a convent for women founded in the 13th century in Chevreuse, a suburb south of Paris. It was reformed in the early 17th century by the abbess Arnauld, who was a minor in his youth, and became famous under the guidance of François de Sales. In 1625, a branch convent (Port-Royal de Paris) was established in Paris, and the main convent, which was reopened in 1648, was called Port-Royal des Champs.
