Plastic composite materials

A composite material in which the continuous phase is plastic or plastic-like. Representative examples are fiber reinforced plastics (abbreviated as FRP), which are made by solidifying long glass fibers, woven cloth, or short glass fibers with thermosetting resins such as unsaturated polyester resin or epoxy resin, and carbon fiber reinforced thermosetting plastics (abbreviated as CFRP), which similarly uses carbon fiber. Both have a high specific elastic modulus (elastic modulus/density) and specific strength (strength/density), and are therefore becoming increasingly popular in aerospace materials, sporting goods, and other applications that require light weight, high strength, and high rigidity.
