A general term for marine fishes belonging to the Peristediidae family of the Scorpaeniformes order, or one of these species. They resemble gurnards (family Gurnardidae), but are distinguished by their bony plates covering their bodies, the two soft rays on the lower part of their pectoral fins that are separated and finger-like, and the complex branching barbels on their lower jaws. Thirteen species from four genera are known to exist in the waters off Japan: Peristedion orientale, Peristedion thriceifolia, Peristedion orientale, and Peristedion orientale. The Peristedion orientale (illustration) is found on the continental shelf south of central Honshu at depths of about 200m, and lives in the shallowest depths of any fish in this family.
