Moriyo

Japanese:
Moriyo

The tomb of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty (reigned 141-87 BC) is located in Xingping County, Shaanxi Province, China. The surrounding area is dotted with the auxiliary tombs of Emperor Wu's noble vassals and beloved concubines. The tomb of Huo Qubing, a hero of the war against the Xiongnu, is the site of the Maoling Cultural Relics Management Office, which displays the many stone animals that once adorned the mound. All of the statues are made of huge granite boulders measuring 2 to 3 meters, and are masterpieces that make use of natural materials, such as a horse trampling on a Xiongnu soldier, a tiger crouching waiting for its prey, and a cow lying listlessly. They are very realistic and full of life. There is an inscribed stone with the characters "Zuo Sikong" written on it, which is thought to have been made by a craftsman belonging to the government office in charge of civil engineering.
