Osaka Copper Theatre

...However, due to a decline in copper production in Osaka, the copper mining company was abolished in 1712 (Shotoku 2) and 17 members of the Osaka copper smelters were contracted to produce 5 million kin of copper for the Nagasaki Imperial Copper Supply. Copper production further declined and the 4.5 million kin of copper exports set by the Kaihakugoshi Shinrei (1715) (1.5 million kin from the Netherlands and 3 million kin from China) could no longer be secured, so the shogunate re-established the copper mining company in Osaka in 1738 (Genbun 3) and stipulated that the Osaka copper mining company would have exclusive rights to purchase all copper produced, that the copper mining company would decide the division of copper produced between local sales and copper exported to Nagasaki according to the amount of copper produced, that each mine would report its annual copper production plan for the following year to the copper mining company, and that the Osaka copper smelters company would have a monopoly on copper silver production (Nanban smelting). According to records from 1574 (An'ei 3), the price of copper exported from Nagasaki was set at 115 momme of silver per pickle (100 jin) for copper with a fixed price for China and 60 momme 25 silver for the Netherlands.
