...One of the two schools of Hindu law in India. The Dayabhaga is a book on joint families and inheritance written by Jimutavāhana in Bengal at the end of the 11th century. Later, commentaries on it were made one after another, forming the Bengal school of law, and during the British rule it became the source of Hindu family law in Bengal. In contrast to the Mitāksāra school of law that was the source of law in other parts of India, this law gave the patriarch great authority, and held that a son's rights to the family property did not arise by birth but after the death of his father.
