A village in Nishikanbara County, central Niigata Prefecture. Population 10,140 (1995). It is located at the northern foot of Mt. Yahiko and faces the Sea of Japan to the west. The eastern part is made up of lowlands along the Nishikawa River, a branch of the Shinano River, and the western part is made up of the Yahiko Mountains and narrow coastal lowlands. The main settlement is the Wano area, where Iwamuro Station on the JR Echigo Line is located. Agriculture and tourism are the main industries. In the early modern period, Iwamuro was a post town on the Hokuriku Kaido road, and is on the approach to Yahiko Shrine, Echigo Ichinomiya. Iwamuro Onsen (saline earth hydrogen sulfide spring, 27°C) was discovered in 1713 (Shotoku 3), and is now designated as a national hot spring. 新潟県中部,西蒲原郡の村。人口1万0140(1995)。弥彦山北麓にあり,西は日本海に面する。東部は信濃川派川の西川沿いの低地,西部は弥彦山地と狭い海岸低地からなる。中心集落はJR越後線岩室駅のある和納地区。農業と観光が産業の中心。岩室は近世,北陸街道の宿場町で,越後一宮の弥彦神社への参道にあたる。1713年(正徳3)には岩室温泉(含食塩土類硫化水素泉,27℃)が発見され,現在は国民温泉に指定されている。
