Bahama Islands (English spelling)

Japanese: バハマ[諸島]（英語表記）Bahama Islands

An archipelago in the northwestern part of the West Indies. It has an area of 14,365 km2. It lies from east of the Florida peninsula to northeast of Cuba, and forms the outermost part of the West Indies island arc, stretching for over 800 km. It is made up of about 700 islands and over 2,000 coral reefs and cays, of which only about 30 are inhabited. With the exception of the British Turks and Caicos Islands at the southeastern end, the Bahamas form the independent Commonwealth of the Bahamas. New Providence Island is the center of the archipelago, and its capital is Nassau. Other major islands include Grand Bahama, Great Abaco, Andros, Eleuthera, and Great Inagua.

西インド諸島北西部の島群。面積1万4365km2。フロリダ半島東方からキューバの北東に位置し，800km以上にわたって西インド諸島島弧の最外縁部を形成する。約700の島と2000以上のサンゴ礁，岩礁からなるが，人が居住する島は約30である。南東端のイギリス領タークス･カイコス諸島を除き，独立国バハマ連邦をなす。ニュープロビデンス島が諸島の中心で首都ナッソーがある。その他おもな島にグランド･バハマ，グレート･アバコ，アンドロス，エリューセラ，グレート･イナグアなどがある。
