An archipelago in the northwestern part of the West Indies. It has an area of 14,365 km2. It lies from east of the Florida peninsula to northeast of Cuba, and forms the outermost part of the West Indies island arc, stretching for over 800 km. It is made up of about 700 islands and over 2,000 coral reefs and cays, of which only about 30 are inhabited. With the exception of the British Turks and Caicos Islands at the southeastern end, the Bahamas form the independent Commonwealth of the Bahamas. New Providence Island is the center of the archipelago, and its capital is Nassau. Other major islands include Grand Bahama, Great Abaco, Andros, Eleuthera, and Great Inagua.
