A tribe from the Zagros Mountains in the east who is said to have founded the Babylonian Second Dynasty (Kassite Dynasty) in the late 16th century BC. They invaded Mesopotamia in the 2nd millennium BC and were defeated by the son of King Hammurabi, but settled in the Tigris and Euphrates River basins in the north of Babylonia and later founded the Babylonian Second Dynasty. They later established their capital at Dur-Kurigalz and ruled Babylonia for about 570 years, but it is thought that they probably overlapped with the Babylonian First Dynasty. In the 12th century BC, they were chased by the Elamites, and after 1000 BC, they retreated to the Zagros Mountains, resisted the Assyrian invasion of the east, and paid tribute to the Achaemenid Empire of Persia. In the 4th century BC, they were conquered by Alexander III (the Great), but later regained their independence. In Akalkuf, on the outskirts of Baghdad, there are ruins of the ziggurat, the temple of Enlil, and the royal palace at Kurigalz.
