[Born] Around 640 BC. Mataurus Died: c. 555 BC. Katana, Sicily. Greek lyric poet. Active in Himera, Sicily. His real name was Teisiās, and Stesichorus is said to be a pen name meaning "chorus master." According to legend, he became blind after slandering Helen in his work Helen, and regained his sight by singing in a song of annulment that it was not the real Helen that Paris had seduced and taken to Troy, but an illusion of her. He composed a wide variety of lyric poems, but is especially famous for his narrative heroic hymns for the chorus, and contributed to the later development of tragedy by incorporating the grandeur of epic poetry into lyric poetry. Only a fragment of about 50 lines of his work remains. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
