A city on the west coast of the southern part of Okinawa Island, Okinawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1962. Approximately one third of the city area is occupied by US military bases, with Marine Corps Air Station Futenma occupying the center. The Okinawa Convention Center and a marina are located on the west coast, and the University of the Ryukyus and Okinawa International University have moved in, so the city is transforming into a university resort city. In 1996, a basic agreement was reached on the relocation of Marine Corps Air Station Futenma at the Japan-US summit. Taro is a specialty of the city. It is home to Futenma Gongen, Mori no Kawa, and Oyama Shell Mounds (historic site). Kakazu Heights in the southwest was a fierce battleground during the Battle of Okinawa. 19.80 km2 .
