A city in central Kochi prefecture facing Tosa Bay. Incorporated as a city in 1889, it is the prefectural capital. It encompasses the Kochi Plain and Urado Bay, and the city center developed on the delta of the Kagami River. It is served by the Tosa Line, Tosa Electric Railway Line, and Kochi Expressway. After Yamauchi Kazutoyo built Kochiyama Castle in 1603, it developed as a castle town for the Tosa Domain. The area around Kochi Castle ruins (Kochi Park) is a district for government offices and schools, and the area around Harimaya Bridge forms a financial and shopping district. Industries such as machinery, steel, cement, and food are located around Urado Bay. Japanese paper, bonito flakes, and coral crafts are local specialties. Vegetable forcing is popular around the city center. The Sunday market on Otesuji and the Yosakoi Festival in August are famous. Katsurahama Beach, Mt. Godai, Kochi Castle ruins (historic site), habitat of the Mikado swallowtail butterfly (special natural monument), and Kochi University are located here. In January 2005, Kagami Village and Tosayama Village in Tosa County were incorporated. In January 2008, Haruno Town in Agawa County was incorporated. Area : 308.99 km2.
