Novelist. Born on February 3, 1912, in Yamanashi Prefecture, where his father was stationed. Graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Tokyo Imperial University. In 1933 (Showa 8), he published "The Character of This Family," which was recognized by Ozaki Kazuo and others, and introduced him to Dazai Osamu and Sakaguchi Ango. He also studied under Sato Haruo. In 1902, his work "Yubari Koteijuku Landscape," published in the Japanese Romantic School, was nominated for the Akutagawa Prize. In 1902, he published the coming-of-age novel "Hanagatami," and in 1904, his poetry collection "Kokuu Zogan." From 1944 to 1951, he traveled around mainland China as a reporter, and after returning to Japan he wrote the clear-spoken masterpieces "Ritsuko: Her Love" and "Ritsuko: Her Death" (1948-50), which depict the death of his wife. In 1951 (Showa 26), he won the Naoki Prize for "Song of Everlasting Regret" (1950) and "The True Story of Ishikawa Goemon" (1950-51), and became a popular author. His other works include "Penguin Chronicle" (1952), "Yuhi to Kenju" (1955-56), "Shining Path" (1956), "The Secret of My Youth" (1960), "Blue Clouds" (1969-70), and "Hard House Man" (1955-75). He lived a free-spirited life faithful to his "natural travel sensibility," and was called a "rebel," but at the root of it all was his poetic spirit. He also wrote many books about travel and food. He passed away on January 2, 1976.
