In the northern part of Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture, there are remains of a castle wall (historic site) from the 9th to 12th centuries. The remains of the Dewa Kokufu (Provincial Government Office). The wall is roughly square, over 700m on each side, with turrets at the four corners, eight-legged gates on all four sides, and a government office in the center.
