[Anti-Security Treaty Movement]
Even under the old Security Treaty, various opposition movements arose when the treaty was implemented. The most representative were the anti-base protests, including the Uchinada Test Range Incident, which began in earnest in 1953, the movement to prevent the conversion of Mt. Asama into a military base (1953), the movement to withdraw the plan to take over Mt. Myogi (peaking in 1955), the issue of the use of the Kita Fuji Maneuver Area (since 1955), and the Sunagawa Base issue (since 1955) (see the entry on Military Bases). In particular, in March 1959, in the Sunagawa Incident (1957), the Tokyo District Court ruled that the US military presence in Japan violated Article 9 of the Constitution, and therefore the Special Criminal Law, which provided particularly strong protection to the US military, was unconstitutional and invalid, and acquitted the defendants. This influenced the growing opposition to the revision of the Security Treaty.

　安保条約に対しては，旧条約の下でもその実施に際しさまざまな反対運動が起こった。代表的なのは基地反対闘争で，1953年に本格化する内灘試射場事件をはじめ，浅間山基地化を阻止した運動(1953)や妙義山接収計画を撤回させた運動(1955年を頂点とする)，北富士演習場使用問題(1955年以降)，砂川基地問題(1955年以降)などが注目された(〈軍事基地〉の項参照)。とくに59年3月，東京地裁は，砂川事件(1957)に対し，アメリカ駐留軍は憲法9条違反であり，したがってアメリカ軍をとくに厚く保護する刑事特別法は違憲･無効とし，被告に無罪の判決を下し，高まりつつあった安保条約改定反対運動に影響を与えた。…
