A branch of the Chinese Wu school. Because Dong Qichang was from Songjiang, Jiangsu Province (formerly Huating, now Shanghai), his school is called the Songjiang school, or the Huating school after its ancient name. Due to Dong Qichang's social status and fame in the art world at the end of the Ming Dynasty, this school replaced the Su Song school as the mainstream of literati painting, but like many other schools of painting from the late Ming Dynasty, its style as a school does not have any particularly distinctive features.
