Yuasa Hangetsu
Born: February 16, 1858 (5th year of the Ansei Era). Ueno, Annaka
[Died] February 4, 1943. Tokyo Poet and Bible scholar. Real name: Yoshiro. Graduated from Doshisha English School in 1885. His new style poem "Twelve Stones," based on the Old Testament, which he recited at his graduation ceremony, became popular and was published in the same year as Japan's first modern poetry collection. He went to the United States in the same year, graduated from Yale University in 1991, and returned to Japan to become a professor at his alma mater, lecturing on biblical studies. After visiting Europe and the United States in 1902-03, he became the director of the Kyoto Prefectural Library and contributed to the spread of library science. After going to the United States in 1921-22, he founded the magazine "Drama." He also attempted to translate the Old Testament's "Song of Songs" from the Hebrew original, and published his own translations of "Job," "Proverbs," and "Ecclesiastes." His representative poetry collection is "Half Moon Collection" (1902), which contributed to the rise of new style poetry in the early days.

詩人,聖書学者。本名,吉郎。 1885年同志社英語学校卒業。卒業の式場で朗読した旧約聖書を題材とする新体詩『十二の石塚』が評判となり,日本最初の近代詩集として同年刊行された。同年渡米,91年エール大学を卒業して帰国,母校の教授となり,聖書学を講じ,1902~03年欧米視察後,京都府立図書館長となり図書館学の普及に貢献した。さらに 21~22年の渡米後,雑誌『劇』を創刊。また旧約聖書『雅歌』のヘブライ語原典からの翻訳を試み,『ヨブ記』『箴言』『伝道の書』を私訳,刊行。代表的詩集に『半月集』 (1902) があり,草創期の新体詩興隆に寄与した。
