One of the prefectures (agata) under the direct control of the ancient imperial court. The Nakoku (Country of Na) mentioned in the Waden (Record of the Later Han Dynasty) and the Wajinden (Record of the Wei Dynasty) is its predecessor. It is located in the area of present-day Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City. The Nihon Shoki states in the 8th year of Emperor Chuai's reign that "they arrived in Na and stayed at Kashihinomiya." There was a port (Nanotsu) in this area, and the entry for May of the 1st year of Emperor Senka states that "the government office should be repaired and built at the mouth of Nanotsu," and the entry for March of the 7th year of Emperor Saimei's reign (661) states that "the imperial ship returned and reached Naotsu."
