Fox thistle - Fox thistle

A biennial plant of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae). The stem is 60-80 cm tall and branches well upwards. The leaves are oblong and deeply pinnately lobed. The upper surface is green, and the underside is white and downy. In May and June, numerous flower heads grow at the ends of the branched branches. The flower heads open upwards. The bracts are spherical, and there is a crest-like crest-like appendage of crest-like crest on the back of the outer bracts. The florets are tubular, pale purple, and bisexual. The oblong achene has 15 sharp ridges. It grows on roadsides and fields in the plains from Honshu to Okinawa, and is also distributed in the Korean Peninsula, China, India, and Australia. The name "Fox" has a similar but different meaning to that of thistle (being deceived by a fox). There is only one species in one genus, and it is distinguished from the Cirsium genus by the fact that the style branches out and the achenes have vertical ridges.

キク科（APG分類：キク科）の越年草。茎は高さ60～80センチメートル、上方でよく分枝する。葉は長楕円(ちょうだえん)形で羽状深裂する。表面は緑色、裏面は綿毛があって白色である。5～6月、分枝した枝先に多数の頭花をつける。頭花は上向きに開く。総包葉は球形で、総包葉外片の背部に紅紫色でとさか状の付属体がある。小花は筒状花のみで、淡紫色、両性で実を結ぶ。長楕円形の痩果(そうか)には15本の鋭い稜線(りょうせん)がある。本州から沖縄の平地の道端や田畑に生え、朝鮮半島、中国、インド、オーストラリアにも分布する。名のキツネは、アザミに似て非なる意味（キツネにだまされる）を表している。1属1種で、アザミ属とは、花柱分枝が開出し、痩果に縦の稜線があることなどで区別される。
