Totem pole

Japanese: totem pole(英語表記)totempole
Totem pole

...The specific natural species is called a totem, a word that comes from the Ojibwe word for American Indians. At first, it was thought to be a custom unique to American Indian tribes who made totem poles as totem images, but as the term totemism was created and examples were reported from various places such as Australia, Melanesia, Polynesia, India, and Africa, it began to attract the interest of many researchers from the late 19th century. In particular, since there were many examples in Australian societies, which were thought to have the most primitive culture at the time, totemism was discussed as a question of the origin of religious phenomena in human history.
