A city in Irkutsk Oblast, in the south of Eastern Siberia, in central-eastern Russia. A key transportation hub about 560 km northwest of the oblast capital Irkutsk. Two main lines of the Trans-Siberian Railway (Omsk-Novosibirsk via line, Barnaul-Abakan via line) join here and continue to Irkutsk, and a branch line to Bratsk-Ust-Kut (connecting to the BAM railway) branches off here. The main road connecting Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk also passes through here. There are many businesses related to railways and automobile traffic, and industries such as automobile repair, sleeper manufacturing, wood processing, and mica processing are located here. It was established in 1938 when the Trans-Siberian Railway was built. It has a population of about 35,000.
