He was a monk at the Zonanbo temple of Yakushiji Temple in Umajima, Kaito County, Owari (Aichi Prefecture), and the founder of the temple's revival. He was the chief priest. He instituted new treatments such as medication and irrigation, and is considered the founder of Japanese ophthalmology. Umajima school of ophthalmology has been passed down from generation to generation and continues to the present day. He passed away on March 19, 1271 (Eiwa 5, Tenju 5).
