Thāru (English spelling)

Japanese: タルー（英語表記）Thāru

The indigenous people of the Terai plains, which stretch from southern Nepal to the southern foot of the Almora Mountains in Uttar Pradesh, northern India. They have a population of about 500,000 (1971), most of whom live within Nepal. There is a strong theory that they are of the Mongoloid race. They are said to have had their own language, but now speak the same North Indian language as the people in the surrounding areas of their respective settlements. They live in villages consisting of single-story thatched houses around the forests of the Inner Terai, the lowlands north of the Terai and Thule Mountains. They cultivate rice, wheat, sugarcane, and other crops, raise cattle and other livestock, and until recently also practiced slash-and-burn agriculture.

ネパール南部一帯から北インドのウッタル･プラデーシュ州のアルモーラ山地南麓にわたるタライ平原の原住民。人口約50万(1971)で，そのほとんどはネパール領内に住む。人種はいわゆるモンゴロイドとする説が強い。言語は固有のものがあったといわれるが，今ではそれぞれの居住地の周辺の人々と同じ北インド系の言葉を話す。彼らはタライおよびチューレ山脈の北の低地である内部タライの森林の周辺に，草ぶき平屋建ての家々から成る集村を営み，米，小麦，サトウキビなどを栽培し，牛などの家畜を飼い，最近まで焼畑も行っていた。
