Indigenous Mayan-speaking people living in many mountain villages in the highlands of central-western Guatemala in Central America. Estimated population: 550,000. The largest indigenous language group in Guatemala. Each village has its own unique cultural type and social and religious organization, and there is no political unity in the Quiché-speaking area as a whole. There is a high degree of fusion of indigenous religion and Christianity, and many villages have cofradías, religious organizations named after Catholic saints. Their main occupation is the cultivation of corn, beans, and pumpkins using slash-and-burn agriculture, but many villages also produce textiles and furniture, and the Guatemalan highlands, including the Quiché-speaking area, have a well-developed distribution economy through regular markets.
